| If I ever doubted that cats are wild animals and natural killers, the past two weeks' events have been confirmation that Taffy is in fact a wild, killer cat. Last week I was woken up by Maria's high pitched glee that was coming from her voice as she said, "Oh my goddess, Taffy caught a bird and it's on your floor!" Slowly I began to wake myself up, much earlier than planned, and as I began to sit up in bed I saw piles of feathers spilled on my bedroom floor. Indeed, what a delightful little gift from Taffy! Not only was the dead bird on my bedroom floor, but the floor is carpeted so cleaning up the "gift" was a massive undertaking. Please keep in mind, at this point I hadn't had my morning coffee, and I still shaken from the thought that a dead bird was inches away from my bed. My imagination was running wild imaging Taffy climbing on my bed and putting any future gift on my blankets, sheets, or worse, her favorite sleeping spot, my stomach! The killing spree was not a one time event. This morning I was woken up again by Maria, this time it was not a high pitched squeals, it was series of shouts that started downstairs on the main floor and then continued to protrude from Maria's mouth as she ran up the stairs and stood in the door way of my bedroom. "Rebecca!, Rebecca!, Guess what?! Taffy caught another bird, and I saw the entire thing! Hurry, get out of bed, Taffy caught another bird! She is so good, aren't you proud of her?!" To Maria's surprise, my only reply was, "Can you please shut the door?" I was disappointed to find out that I was not having a bad dream, Taffy had in fact killed another bird. As I passed Cristina in the upstairs hallway she warned me, "There is blood streaked across the floor". Thank goodness Cristina warned me because it was mess! I will spare the details but the kill started outside, was taken inside and not confined to the floor, some of the kill took place in the air! In conclusion, Maria feels very honored to have witnessed the entire kill from start to finish. It is very sad, and we are all reminded that we live in a fallen world, but it is healthy on Earth for cats to kill small prey. I am very proud of Taffy because she is turning 12 at the end of this month. The three of us girls are terrified because... guess what... we cannot find the bird! It is our hope that the bird has been put to rest. We moved the furniture and we still weren't able to find it. I have a feeling that this is a gift from Taffy that will keep on giving and in a few days we will blessed with a smell. It is at times like these that I really wish I still lived at home and had my Father around. Growing up I never had to deal with the "gifts", and now I do. Maybe this is why my parents say they can now live in freedom because their three children have moved out and they currenly have no pets. |
